Your Guide to Curtain Shopping: Design and Color

IMG_20131102_170330Imagine a home without curtains – dull and boring. Hence, curtains are considered as one of the staple accessories every homeowner should invest into. However, there are a lot of curtains that comes in different colors, designs, patterns and fabric, making it difficult for you to choose which one will best suit your home.

To help ease your confusion and limit your choices, here are tips in buying curtains in terms of the design, color and fabric.

  •  Be careful with colors. Do you want your curtains to blend with your furniture or make a statement? If you want it to blend with your home decor, go for curtains that have the same tone with the wall or at least a few shades darker. You can also go for a subtle color found in one of your home accessories. On the other hand, if you want your curtains to stand out, then go for colors that is in contrast (but can still complement) with the color of your couch or wall.
  • Consider your furniture. If you have a patterned couch or an eccentric rug, then choose a curtain that has a solid color. Going for bold designs, along with the patterned look of your furniture, can be strenuous to the eyes. If you prefer something with designs or patterns, go for simple, less elaborate designs. Consequently, a solid-colored furniture calls for patterned curtains or something with intricate patterns.
  • How will the room be used? The purpose of the room should also be part of the factors to consider when choosing a curtain. If the room will be used as a formal space, try going for blackout curtains where the light is unable to penetrate. Otherwise, you can buy something with a vibrant hue and pattern for more cheery, uplifting mood.

Again, the key is making sure everything inside the room complements each other. At the same time, let your personal touch stand out.

Dull Couch? Tips in Decorating your Couch using Throw Pillows

Buying a sofa means living with the pillows that come with it. While it does match your couch, it does not really bring more life to the furniture itself. And one way of putting drama into it is by making use of throw pillows.

Throw pillows are considered as decorative elements that complete the look of the couch. It comes in various designs, pattern, shape and color. However, choosing the right throw pillow is important because it can make or break the look of your living room.

Here are some tips on how to decorate your couch with throw pillows.

  • The color and design of your pillows should complement the look of your couch. If you have a dark-colored couch, then don’t go for dark pillows too. It will make your couch look so cramped. On the other hand, light-colored couch calls for solid patterns and darker colors.
  • Don’t go traditional. This means going past the pillows in pairs or in the same shape. Try placing three or five pillows in different arrangement, as if it just happened to be there. Or you can combine square pillows (the most common) with round pillows too. If you want to stick with square pillows, try combining it in different sizes for more modern look.
  • Consider how the couch will be used. If your couch is an often-occupied room, then don’t go for pillows with ornate embroidery or complex stitching or even beads. Opt for simple designs with washable fabrics.
  • Mix and match. Even if the pillows are in contrast with the color of your sofa, make sure that all the throw pillows complement each other. Place a round or oblong pillow at the center of your couch then square pillows on each side in different sizes with patterns that will match the look of your couch.
  • Let your personality shine through. No matter what advice we give you, at the end of the day, it’s still your choice. Try to match the colors and patterns of your pillows to your personal style. If you’re a fun, vibrant type of person, choose designs that can help uplift the mood of those sitting on your couch.

And of course, don’t put too much pillows where it will be impossible for you, or even your guests, to sit. If you have a two-seater couch, three to four pillows will do.
